The sun is shining and the birds are singing. That means the warmer months are ahead and it’s once again the ideal time to hit the road on two wheels. Motorcyclists from all over the country live for the months when they can load up and get out to feel the wind and sun on their faces. If you’re ready to be out on the open road, make sure you’re really ready with all you need to keep you safe and supplied.
While you could throw on just any pair of shoes for days when you will feel the wind in your hair, your best bet is to find a good pair of motorcycle boots for long rides. This is especially true if you have invested into a tough bike like a Harley. When you’re sitting on a piece of steel almost too cool for the road itself, you better look good while doing it.
The fact of the matter is that dudes or chicks on bikes get a lot of attention on the road. So if you’re riding the ultimate bike, you need to look like you belong on it. Yes, you have to deserve that bike. That means leather jacket, cool helmet and motorcycle boots. Dressed like this, you look like you belong on that hog and can feel confident while riding the roads.
Even though you are not technically on your feet as you ride your bike, your feet need to be protected and comfortable. Motorcycle boots are made to be comfortable, with plenty of padding for your feet. While they oftentimes look heavy, motorcycle boots are pretty light for the most part. You don’t want to get a workout in clomping around in heavy boots!
To get you where you want to go with what you need when you get there, you need motorcycle saddlebags. There is a wide variety of accessories you could buy for your motorcycle; but it is motorcycle saddlebags that really provide a useful function for the avid rider.
There are two popular types of motorcycle saddlebags: bolt on and throw-over. Bolt on saddlebags are attached directly to your bike. Most styles will come with mounting brackets. If you find a bolt-on style that does not come with brackets, these can be ordered independently. The bolt-on style of saddlebags can be installed pretty quickly and easily, and give the biker customization above other types of bags or luggage. Most motorcycles can handle bolt-on style saddlebags.
The throw-over type of saddlebag provides one of the easiest ways to add extra storage to your bike without the use of mounting brackets. The best thing about throw-over saddlebags is that they are easy to put on and take off. So if you’ve got valuables you’d rather not leave on the bike when you make pit-stops, you can just grab the saddlebag and take it with you. When you put throw-over saddlebags on your bike, you don’t have to worry about theft; you don’t have to lock them up. All you have to do is unzip, unbuckle or unsnap your bags and away you go.

With each pair of boots you have, you should take the time to properly maintain them. The few minutes it takes will greatly extend the life of the boots.
1. CLEAN
Do not let dirt and dust accumulate on leather products. After each wearing, boots should be wiped down with a damp, not wet, cloth. Dust and dirt can break down the leather and shorten the life of your boots. Allow your boots to dry out thoroughly between wearings. This prevents the onset of bacteria from forming in the leather. Allow your boots to air dry, do not set them near heat. It will dry them out excessively.
2. CONDITION
Conditioning leather is important because conditioner helps to maintain the original look and feel of the leather. Conditioning keeps the boots from drying out. Use a conditioner specially formulated for boots. Lanolin based products work best.
3. POLISH
To keep boots looking their best, you should periodically apply a matching boot cream polish. The polish will help to cover any scuffs and can be brought to a bright luster.
4. PROTECT
Protect your boots even more with water repellent, use boot trees to help maintain your boots shape and form and use edge dressing on the outside edge to maintain welt color.

Warmer weather and sunny days usually bring with them more outdoor activities as people emerge from their homes after a long, cold winter. Along with those sun worshipers and water sport enthusiasts are those dedicated motorcyclists and their riders who have yearned to feel the rumble of powerful motors and the feel of warm wind swirling all around them as they hit a smooth stretch of roadway. The weather brings out the motorcyclists but it is the road that beckons them to ride.
The United States House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee passed a resolution April 2 supporting the goals of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in May. Key messages of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month encourage riders to get trained and licensed, to always wear protective gear, to never drink and ride, and to ride within their limits. Motorists are also beckoned to be aware of two-wheel traffic and look out for riders (research shows auto drivers are at fault in approximately two thirds of fatal car/motorcycle crashes). The resolution, H. Res. 269, introduced by Reps. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., and Michael Burgess, R-Texas, is similar to one unanimously passed by the full House last year.
May has long been designated as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. The messages for all road users are especially timely as motorcyclists nationwide gear up for the upcoming riding season. Although May is “Motorcycle Safety Month“, both car and motorcycle operators share the responsibility to “see and be seen” and use good common sense in operating their vehicles each and every month. Share the road
Here are several tips for drivers to help keep motorcyclists safe on our roadways:
1. Remember the motorcycle is a vehicle with all of the rights and privileges of any other motor vehicle on the roadway. Always allow a motorcyclist the full lane width ,never try to share a lane
2. Always make a visual check for motorcycles by checking mirrors and blind spots before entering or leaving a lane of traffic and at intersections
3. Always signal your intentions before changing lanes or merging with traffic
4. Don’t be fooled by a flashing turn signal on a motorcycle. Motorcycle signals are often not self-canceling and riders sometimes forget to turn them off. Wait to be sure the motorcycle is going to turn before you proceed
5. Allow more following distance, three or four seconds, when behind a motorcycle, so the motorcyclist has enough time to maneuver or stop in an emergency. And don’t tailgate. In dry conditions, motorcycles can stop more quickly than cars.
Motorcyclists can increase their safety by:
Avoid riding in poor visibility conditions
Wearing brightly colored motorcycle apparel and a DOT or Snell approved Motorcycle Helmet
Use your turn signals for every turn or lane change, even if you think no one will see it
Combine hand and turn signals to draw more attention to the you and the bike.
Using reflective tape and stickers or choose riding gear with reflective material.
Position the bike in the lane where they will be most visible to other drivers.
The number 1 tip anyone can give to a rider or driver is to BE AWARE. It does not matter if you re in a car or on a bike if you are aware of what is going on around you, you will be better prepared to react quickly if needed.

April is when many motorcyclists begin their riding season. April is also Helmet Safety month, and a good time for every rider to ensure they’re properly protected with a few vital inspections. These 5 tips will help you save your life with your Motorcycle Helmet.
- Fit is Very Important
A helmet must fit properly to be effective, and not all helmets fit the same. A well-fitting open face helmet should rest one inch above your eyebrows and shouldn’t roll forward or sideways on your head. To ensure a comfortable fit that doesn’t squeeze too tightly, wear a helmet for 20 minutes before making a final buying decision.
- Helmets Do Not Last Forever
Over time, exposure to heat and the aging of adhesives and components will damage a helmet’s protective qualities. That’s why manufacturers and the SNELL Foundation recommend that helmets be replaced every 2 to 4 years, depending on use. Every new helmet comes with a manufactured date sticker that is placed under the comfort liner for a quick reference.
- Keep it Clean
A clean and well-cared-for helmet will protect better and longer. Use a mild soap to wash the outer shell and internal liners. Never use solvents or chemicals for cleaning as they can destroy protective coatings. Consult the manufacturers recommended care instructions before cleaning.
- One Drop is All it Takes
A helmet is designed for only one impact. Even a small impact may fracture the outer shell or compress the impact-absorbing liner despite no visible damage. If a helmet has been dropped or suffers an impact, it should be replaced immediately. You do not want to test your luck in an accident.
- You Should Ask Questions?
Riders can learn more about helmet fit and care with the help of a helmet dealer. Most Motorcycle Helmet dealers carry a wide range of helmet styles, including half-, three-quarter, full-face and modular designs.

The following are instructions for cleaning leather Cowboy boots: Before cleaning leather, determine whether the leather is finished – like luggage, furniture and garments – or unfinished – like baseball gloves, work boots and saddles. Then follow the instructions below to keep your leather looking fabulous.
Do not use these steps for Suede leather. Suede leather should be brushed out with a bristle brush.
Finished Leather
Step1
Place a small amount of a gentle, moisturizing soap such as Dove on a damp cloth and bring it to a light lather.
Step2
Rub the damp cloth on the leather without putting too much water on the leather.
Step3
Wipe away lather with a fresh damp cloth. Don’t rinse the leather in water.
Step4
Polish leather with a dry towel.
Step5
Treat leather with a leather conditioner after it has dried completely.
Unfinished Leather
Step1
Use a damp cloth or sponge to rub saddle soap into the leather; work soap into a light lather.

Oil leather with a leather preservative such as mink oil.
